Basic K9 First Aid Course
What You’ll Learn
Students will learn how to safely work around operational canines and the importance of the canine-handler bond. Basic comparative anatomy and physiology will be covered along with recognition and treatment of common illnesses and injuries that the operational canine may encounter while in the line of duty. The Maine EMS Operational Canine Protocols will be reviewed as pertains to the EMT level. All care and treatment discussed will be with the ultimate goal of evacuation and transport to definitive veterinary care.

Program Structure
This course has a mix of didactic/lectures along with hands-on practice with live dogs as well as models. All learning materials will be provided at the course, students do not need to bring any materials with them.
What’s Included
Students will receive course materials, including handouts and electronic access to a variety of resources.
Session Lengths
This 8-hour course is broken into a 4-hour morning block, followed by a 1 hour lunch break and 4-hour afternoon block.
Canines
There will be live dogs participating in the course. It is expected that students will behave appropriately and safely around these animals.
